What is HeyMariner?
HeyMariner is a comprehensive maritime intelligence platform providing ship tracking, port data, regulations, calculators, and professional tools for mariners worldwide.
Is HeyMariner free to use?
Yes! Core features including ship search, port data, regulations, and basic calculators are free. Pro membership unlocks advanced features, API access, and unlimited document downloads.
How do I create an account?
Click "Sign Up" in the top navigation, enter your email and password, verify your email, and complete your mariner profile with your rank and vessel type.
What browsers are supported?
HeyMariner works best on Chrome 90+, Firefox 88+, Safari 14+, and Edge 90+. Mobile browsers on iOS 14+ and Android 10+ are also fully supported.
Is there a mobile app?
A mobile app is coming soon. In the meantime, the website is fully responsive and works excellently on all mobile browsers.
Ship Tracking
How do I track a ship?
Go to the Ships section, enter the vessel name, MMSI, or IMO number in the search bar, and select the vessel from results. Click "Track Live" to start real-time position updates.
Why is a vessel's position not updating?
AIS transponders may be turned off (Class B vessels), out of satellite coverage, or the vessel may be in port. Some vessels in sensitive areas disable AIS temporarily.
What does MMSI number mean?
MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) is a unique 9-digit number assigned to each vessel for radio identification and AIS tracking.
How accurate is AIS position data?
AIS positions are accurate to within 10 meters under normal conditions. Satellite AIS data may have up to 2-minute latency; terrestrial AIS is near real-time.
Can I track vessel history?
Yes — on the vessel detail page, click "Voyage History" to see past route data (Pro feature), including port calls and position history for the last 30 days.
Calculators
Are the calculators free to use?
Yes — all 68+ maritime calculators are currently available for free. Some advanced calculators (draft survey, stability) may require a Pro account in future.
How accurate are the stability calculators?
Calculators use standard IMO formulae. They are provided for educational and guidance purposes only — never replace vessel-specific stability booklets and formal stability calculations.
Can I save calculator results?
PDF export of results is coming soon. Currently, you can copy results or take a screenshot. Saved calculations will be a Pro feature.
What is a Draft Survey Calculator?
A draft survey calculator determines cargo quantity by measuring vessel drafts before and after loading/discharging, using hydrostatics to calculate displacement difference.
Can I suggest a new calculator?
Yes! Contact us at calculators@heymariner.com with your calculator suggestion, formula, and use case. We add new tools every month.
Documents
What types of documents are available?
HeyMariner hosts SOLAS checklists, MARPOL compliance templates, STCW training materials, ISM Code guides, stability manuals, and vessel-specific forms in PDF and Excel formats.
How many documents can I download?
Free users can download up to 10 documents per month. Pro members have unlimited downloads plus access to the full archive of 1,800+ documents.
Are the documents official?
Documents are sourced from IMO publications, flag state administrations, and maritime organizations. Always verify you have the latest version from official sources for operational use.
Can I upload my own documents?
Document sharing for crew/company use is planned as a Pro feature. Contact enterprise@heymariner.com for bulk/company accounts.
Are forms fillable?
Most Excel templates are fillable. PDF forms are generally for reference. Fillable PDF versions are being developed and will be released progressively.
Account & Profile
How do I update my rank and vessel type?
Go to Profile → Edit Profile. You can update your rank, vessel type, company, certifications, and bio at any time.
Can I verify my STCW certificates?
Yes — go to Profile → Certifications and upload scanned copies. Verified badges appear on your public profile after admin review (24-48 hours).
How do I change my email address?
Go to Settings → Account. Enter your new email address and password to confirm. A verification email will be sent to your new address.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings → Account → Delete Account. Note: account deletion is permanent and removes all your data, posts, and saved content.
Is my profile visible to other users?
Your public profile (name, rank, country, bio) is visible. Your email and contact details are private by default. Adjust visibility in Settings → Privacy.
API & Developers
Does HeyMariner have a public API?
Yes — the HeyMariner REST API provides access to vessel data, port information, NAVAREA warnings, and regulations. See /developers for documentation.
How do I get an API key?
Sign up for a Pro or Developer account at /subscription, then go to Settings → API Keys to generate your key. Free tier includes 1,000 calls/month.
What is the API rate limit?
Free: 1,000 req/month. Pro: 50,000 req/month. Enterprise: unlimited. Rate limits reset on the 1st of each month.
Is there an MCP server available?
Yes — HeyMariner provides an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for AI integrations. See /developers/mcp for setup instructions and schema.
Do you support webhooks?
Yes — webhooks for NAVAREA warnings, vessel arrivals/departures, and regulatory updates are available on the Pro plan. Configure at /developers/webhooks.
