Application

Applies to all types of cargo other than solid and liquid bulk cargoes, livestock, and timber deck cargoes. Covers break bulk, containers, RoRo, project cargo.

Documentation

Ships carrying general cargo must carry a Cargo Securing Manual (CSM) approved by the Flag State Administration. The CSM describes all securing equipment on board.

Cargo Securing Manual (CSM)

Must contain: general information, cargo securing equipment, stowage and securing of cargo, CTU stowage and securing, special cargoes (vehicles, project cargo, timber, etc.).

Securing Devices

Equipment includes: lashing rods and chains, wire ropes, webbing straps, turnbuckles, tensioners, twistlocks, stackers, anti-skid mats, and airbags.

Cargo Transport Units (CTUs)

Containers, flat racks, roll trailers, swap bodies. Shipper responsible for proper packing. CTU Code (2014) provides guidance on packing and securing inside CTUs.

Weather Routing & Sea State

Securing arrangements must consider weather and sea state for the intended voyage. Calculation method uses roll period, acceleration forces and lashing capacity.

Cargo Securing Manual

The CSM is mandatory for all cargo ships under SOLAS Chapter VI. It must be approved by the Flag State Administration or a recognized organization on its behalf.
